Setting up Passkeys for your Microsoft account
Welcome to this step by step guide on how to set up passkeys for your Microsoft work or school account.
Requirements:
- Company email e.g.: name@company.com
- A mobile device with the Microsoft Authenticator app
- A Windows or Mac machine with the latest updates
Setting up a passkey directly in Microsoft Authenticator (phone):
You can also set up a passkey directly from within the Microsoft Authenticator app, without using the website.
Step 1: Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
Step 2: Select your work or school account
Step 3: Tap on the account to open its details
Step 4: Tap on "Set up passkey" or "Enable phone sign-in / passkey"
Step 5: Follow the on screen instructions
Step 6: Approve using Face ID, fingerprint, or your device PIN
After completing these steps, the passkey will be saved on your mobile device.
Setting up a passkey using Microsoft Authenticator (phone):
If you already use Microsoft Authenticator for MFA approvals, you can follow these steps directly. You may be asked to approve a sign-in during setup.
Step 1: Go to https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
Step 2: Login with your email address and password
Step 3: Click on "Add sign-in method"
Step 4: Select "Passkey (FIDO2)"
Step 5: Choose "Use a phone or tablet"
Step 6: A QR code will appear on your screen
Step 7: Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone
Step 8: Tap the + icon and select "Work or school account"
Step 9: Scan the QR code
Step 10: Follow the on screen instructions and approve using Face ID, fingerprint, or your device PIN
After completing these steps, the passkey will be saved on your mobile device.
Setting up a passkey using Windows Hello:
Step 1: Open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
Step 2: Make sure Windows Hello (PIN, face, or fingerprint) is configured
Step 3: Go to https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo
Step 4: Login with your account
Step 5: Click on "Add sign-in method"
Step 6: Select "Passkey (FIDO2)"
Step 7: Choose "Use this device"
Step 8: Complete the Windows Hello verification
After completing these steps, the passkey will be saved on your Windows device.
Signing in using a passkey:
Step 1: Enter your email address on the login page
Step 2: Choose "Use a passkey"
Step 3: Select your device (phone or this device)
Step 4: Approve the sign-in using biometrics or PIN

Passkeys provide a secure way to sign in without using a password. We recommend setting up both a phone and a Windows device passkey so you always have a backup available.
